Tree Preservation Order (TPO)

Tree preservation orders are issued by the local planning authority. The purpose of a TPO is to protect trees which bring significant amenity benefit to the local area. This protection is particularly important where trees are under threat. All types of trees can be protected anything from a single tree to all trees within the defined area or woodland. This process normally takes 6-8 weeks to apply for permission to carry out any work.

Conservation Areas

Normal TPO procedures apply if a tree in a conservation area is already protected by a TPO. But if a tree in a conservation area is not covered by a TPO, you have to give written notice to the Local Planning Authority (by letter, email or on the LPA’s form) of any proposed work, describing what you want to do, at least six weeks before the work starts. This is called a ‘section 211 notice’ & it gives the LPA an opportunity to consider protecting the tree with a TPO.

“Stuart did a great job. He arrived promptly and worked quickly to remove a large conifer in our front garden. The wood was stacked neatly and the paths were left wonderfully tidy. I would definitely use Greenwells again. Thank you!”
